Emergency Preparedness: Moss Bay Neighborhood to Lend a Hand

A crisis occurs and we worry. It subsides and we relax. Just like a good insurance policy, being prepared for those unexpected events can go a long way towards giving us peace of mind.

That is what our neighborhood association volunteers were thinking about when they were planning this months meeting agenda. It all came about when a group of them got together to figure out what our 2002 Grant money should go towards. That was back at the start of October. What do you think was at the forefront of their minds at that time? September 11th.

Realizing that a small neighborhood group doesn’t have the resources to provide supplies needed in a time of crisis, they decided they would simply try to educate their neighbors on how to help themselves. "We want people to be aware of what they will really need for survival in the event that something terrible should happen," explained Ellen McMahon, who came up with the original idea.

Needing no grant money for this type of education meant they would not have to wait until 2002 to implement the idea. "People need this information now when they are thinking about it," said Kari Page, Neighborhood Services Coordinator, who helped schedule the guest speakers for the meeting. Immediately, phone calls were made to those who know first hand about emergencies and what to do in a crisis situation - the Fire and Police Departments.

Eager to assist, Fire Chief Jeff Blake agreed to come and give a presentation, one that he has given before. The Fire Department has developed this presentation on emergency preparedness, understanding and sympathizing with citizens concerns. Janelle McMillian, Community Resource Officer with the Police Department, also said she would assist us by providing useful information from her side of things.

At the meeting, printed informative material will be handed out, along with 20 collapsible plastic water jugs, which will be given to the first 20 neighbors who arrive. "Water is an urgent need. You can only live three days with out it. It is the one thing everyone should have in their home," explained John Alberti, neighborhood co-chair, and the one who came up with the water jug give-a-way. John thought that it would be nice to give the entire neighborhood the jugs but that would be out of the question considering that there are more than 4,000 residences in the Moss Bay Neighborhood. He hoped that along with all the useful information being presented, the 20 water jugs would be an added incentive for people to come to the meeting.

The meeting will take place Thursday, December 6th, 7 to 8:45pm in the Kirkland Library meeting room. As always, snacks and drinks will be provided, so if you don’t get there in time for one of the 20 water jugs you can at least walk away with some good info and some sweets to eat.
