Our February Meeting

We had a great neighborhood meeting last month. Dave Ramsay, City Manager, came and gave his "Walk About Town" talk and Bob Sternoff, President of the Parks Board, updated us on the progress of some parks projects. Dave spoke first about what was happening in the different neighborhoods. One of the hot topics for 2002, which greatly affects us in the Moss Bay Neighborhood, is the proposed Transit Center. Dave dispelled some rumors by explaining a decision about its location has not been determined and that alternative locations may be sought out since the three proposed sites all have some difficulties. He said not to worry, full public process would be done before the City makes a decision. As a neighborhood, we will be gathering as much information as we can about the proposals and reporting it to our residences and gathering the ideas and concerns of our residences and voicing them to the city. Our bi-monthly neighborhood meetings will be the forum for this, so stay tuned. Bob gave an overview of what the Parks Board would be working on in 2002 and explained that a site for new bathrooms at Marina Park has been chosen. The current bathrooms are in need of costly repairs making it more sensible to build new ones in a better location. Plans for the building design are still in the conception stage (we will have updates at the neighborhood meetings as the information becomes available).

It is great to have guest speakers from the City come to the meetings as it really gets the residents involved by them being able to ask questions or make comments directly to the source. Thank you Dave and Bob for coming to our meeting.

There still seems to be confusion about the location and affiliation of the Moss Bay Neighborhood Association. I think part of this confusion may stem from the fact that the neighborhoods section in this paper contains a "Downtown" article. The "Downtown" neighborhood column, written by Rod Graham, represents the businesses, clubs, retail associations, etc. in downtown Kirkland, not the residences. It is not a neighborhood association. Rod does a great job of letting us know who and what is coming and going in the retail and restaurant world and keeping us abreast of the what the different clubs and groups are doing around town. The Moss Bay article, like the other neighborhood articles, represents the neighborhood association for the residents of our City designated geographic area. The Moss Bay Neighborhood is located (approximately) in the area between NE 85th Street south to 68th St, and runs east and west from the train tracks to Lake Washington. Each neighborhood association (12 in all) is essentially a liaison between the City of Kirkland and the residences of that neighborhood. The Moss Bay Mission Statement is: "…to maintain and improve the unique residential characteristics of the Moss Bay Neighborhood." I hope this clears things up. If you are unsure if you reside in the Moss Bay Neighborhood give me a call and I will find your address on our map or you can call, Kari Page, Kirkland’s Neighborhood Services Coordinator, 828-7973, who has the map for all of Kirkland’s Neighborhood Associations.

Thanks for the Responses

Thanks again to all the people who answered my Kirkland survey in January’s paper. I got a few more responses after the article went to print and I just want to say I really appreciate you all taking the time. The ideas and comments were well received by the City and the different Downtown groups and were even shared with the Kirkland City Council. I am mulling over some ways to possibly take the responses to the next step of implementation and may need your help again. I will keep you posted.

Our next meeting will be, Thursday, April 4th at 7pm in the Kirkland Library meeting room. If you can’t make it to the meeting check out our web site, www.mossbay.org  If you would like to be on our active e-mail list please e-mail Don Winters, our webmaster, at winters58@hotmail.com  For any other inquires please e-mail either neighborhood co-chair; John Alberti at quietlyjr@aol.com or Laura Lee Pritt at lauraleepritt@hotmail.com
