Pace Chemical Site
We are working once again on what brought our neighborhood association into existence in the first place; the Pace Chemical Site, located at the east end of 7th Avenue South near the train tracks. After a lot of work to get the parking, accessed from a residential street, for the proposed redevelopment reduced to 35 spaces, the owner has now decided to merely remodel the existing building and not redevelop the site. This means a whole new set of concerns will have to be dealt with, like semi-trucks backing into peoples yards to turn around at the loading doc. We are working with the city and the property manager to come up with some solutions that will work for everyone. If you have any concerns please contact John Alberti, Moss Bay Neighborhood Co-Chair at (425) 822-5028.
Thanks to the City
I have heard several comments from the neighbors about how happy they are that the city has asphalted the section of sidewalk along Lake Washington Boulevard between 7th Avenue South and the Shumway Condominiums. The sidewalk along this section of the street had previously been dirt and gravel and many of the neighbors in this area wanted it paved for easier access to downtown. The Moss Bay Neighborhood Association worked with the City of Kirkland to get it paved back in March. Now that it is summer and people are taking more walks, they are very thankful the sidewalk is there. Our gratitude goes to the Public Works Department and especially to Ray Steiger, Capital Projects Manager for being so responsive on this issue. We are really enjoying the sidewalk!
Summer Picnic
It’s that time of the year again and the picnic committee got together July 19th to begin planning our annual summer neighborhood picnic. The Picnic will be held Sunday, September 16th, the same weekend it was held last year and the same weekend as the Bite of Kirkland. This weekend worked out well for us last year as many people who were already downtown for the Bite stopped by our picnic and found out that they lived in the Moss Bay Neighborhood and that we have a neighborhood association. Awareness is the first step! (Many people don’t realize that Kirkland is divided up into designated city neighborhoods and there are neighborhood associations established in each one as a liaison between the city and concerned citizens. If you are interested in learning more about your neighborhood association or you have a concern you would like to have addressed, contact Kari Page, City of Kirkland Neighborhood Services Coordinator (425) 828-7973 and she will let you know what neighborhood you are in and who to contact).
For the picnic entertainment, one of our own resident neighbors is part of a musical duo that will performing, and as always the Bubble Man will be there for the kids. This year we are arranging to have burgers and hotdogs along with the potluck food instead of the cold sandwiches we had last year hoping the BBQ aroma will entice more neighbors to come!
We are in great need of volunteers to help with this event, either in making the necessary arrangements, helping with the set-up and clean up or even with just bringing some potato salad or cookies. If you would like to help out please contact Laura Lee Pritt, Moss Bay Neighborhood Co-Chair at (425) 827-0790.
Next Meeting
Out next Moss Bay Neighborhood is August 8th, 7 to 8:45pm in the Kirkland Library meeting room. We will have an update and hopefully some action to report on the unoccupied PACE Chemical site. A traffic study is to be done on the entire Moss Bay area and much input is needed so come and share your thoughts. Also, we are looking into applying the "skinny street" concept to State Street, which is a City of Kirkland street program, and will be talking about that at the meeting as well. Check out our web site for any new news or updates about these and other Kirkland topics: www.mossbay.org.
